Holiday Toy Draw - PLEASE READ

Well it’s that time of year again as we gear up for the holidays along with one of our key fund raising efforts.

100% of the proceeds will go to subsidizing your children’s school field trips, so everyone wins!

Spin Master Ltd (Air Hogs, Zoobles etc) along with Webkinz have generously donated approximately 100 toys for kids of all ages (yes there is even a $100 Air Hog Helicopter that “ANY DAD” would love to fly) to be raffled off on Thursday night.

This has been a very successful fundraiser in past years helping to put computers in our school. Please help support this important campaign that will help to enrich our children’s academic year. You or your child can purchase tickets before or after school. The last day to purchase tickets is this Thursday!

Happy Holidays on behalf of Shaughnessy Public School and the Parent Council

Good Evening Parents and Guardians,

We will sell popcorn at afternoon recess tomorrow.

We will be having a draw for toys
of all kinds. The money raised will contribute to subsidizing school buses for field trips. Ticket will be sold for $2 each, 3 for $5, or 7 for $10 and will be available for purchase in the school lobby from December 8th until December 15th, from 8 – 8:45 am & 3:15 – 4:00 pm. More information can be found in you child(ren)'s shuttle and by following this link.

QSP (Magazine) Orders due date is being extended to Monday, December 12th due to the PA day on December 9th. Please endeavour to have the orders to the school/main office by end of the school day on Monday as due to the Christmas Holiday and closure schedule for QSP we are on a bit of a tight deadline to get our orders entered before Christmas.

Online orders can be placed at any time both before and after the due date, if you miss the December 12th deadline. Our school group id# is 9517 if placing the orders online.

This is a fundraiser that many of us are very excited about. It is a great no cost to us fundraiser whereby 100% of the profits will go back into the school and students through the Shaughnessy Parent Council. The magazines make for great gifts for those hard to buy for people in our lives. There are many great kids magazines as well that are fun, entertaining and educational.

Thank you

Trustee by-elections coming to Don Valley East and Scarborough-Agincourt

On February 27, 2012, voters in two northeast Toronto communities will go to the polls to choose new public school board trustees. Toronto District School Board seats in Ward 17 (Don Valley East) and Ward 20 (Scarborough-Agincourt) were declared vacant after former Trustees Michael Coteau and Soo Wong were elected to Queen’s Park in October.

A resolution passed by the Board at its last meeting recognized that voting is a fundamental right of our democracy, and asked the City to hold by-elections in the two Wards. Under Ontario’s Education Act, if the Board does not direct the City to hold elections, trustee vacancies must be filled by Board appointees. With fully three-quarters left in a four-year term of office, the upcoming by-elections will safeguard the right of local Toronto parents and communities to determine who represents them on the TDSB.

Until the two vacancies are filled in February, the office of the Chair of the Board will be available to address any constituent concerns in Wards 17 and 20. For more information about the upcoming by-elections, including candidate nomination forms, please visit www.toronto.ca/elections.

Lunch Time Sports could disappear next year

-------------------------------------

The Problem

At the last Parent Council meeting, Ian mentioned that the new full day Kindergarten program will force us to relocate the lunch room to the gymnasium.

Lunch Time Sports Could Disappear

Several parents have expressed concern about what will happen to our lunch-time sports programs next year when the gym is used as our new lunch room. These programs form an important part of our school and they are essential to a "balanced" and healthy oriented culture.

Ian and our faculty have done a terrific job building & managing these activities over the past few years and their efforts are appreciated and valued by everyone. Every year brings new challenges and we know many of parents would like to work collaboratively to brainstorm ideas, lobby and do whatever is necessary to preserve what we have.

Proposed Solutions Are Not Realistic

Using the gymnasium as a lunch room and relying solely on the outdoors is not a sustainable solution. The obvious options will undoubtedly face obstacles and controversy. At the very least, a strong united group can help apply pressure and ensure that every possible option is thoroughly explored.

We Need Your Help

If you are interested in participating in a committee that will address this one issue, please reply to this email (sps.vicechair@parentcouncil.info ) before December 15th.

Thank you.

Hope in Action’s Red Nose Campaign

Dear Parent/Guardian,

I’m excited to announce that our school will be participating in the Hope in Action Red Nose Campaign to assist Toronto students in need. Between December 6th and 16th we will sell flashing red noses for $3.00. All proceeds go to the Hope in Action Emergency Fund that provides students with food, warm clothes, gloves, shoes, winter boots and other necessities. The need is great, with requests for assistance coming in daily.

For more information on the Hope in Action Emergency Fund, please visit the website of the Toronto Foundation for Student Success at www.TorontoFoundationForStudentSuccess.ca.

We encourage our students to participate and help support this great cause.

Yours sincerely,

T. WebbT
